New programs!!!  Starting this summer are two life changing programs that will forever impact lives.  We are "making tears disappear" in a variety of ways and constantly keeping the interests of youth on the front burner.  Meadowgate Cavaliers is an exciting new program that has been visualized for boys (but girls are certainly welcomed) that wanted to "play" with horses but did not want to join local pony clubs which consist of mostly girls.  This program is not offered anywhere else!  If you would like to become a sponsor in this program so that more youth may attend please contact us.  Remember Meadowgate is a non profit organization and donations are tax deductible.

Our Equine Facilitated Mental Health Therapy program is targeted for youth (between 10-18 yrs.) that are in need of a mentoring program that instills hope and restores mental well being.  Program available between April 1 and November 1.  This program covers a wide range of issues.  All may not be listed and each child is individual.  Some examples:

  • victims of trauma
  • learning challenges and disabilities
  • behavior issues
  • Emotional disturbances
  • Grief/loss
  • Relationship establishment

  • Dysfunctional homelife
  • Other mental health diagnosis

Sessions are instructed by a certified therapeutic riding instructor(NARHA) who also holds a Master degree in Clinical Psychology.  Julianne Wrolstead has worked with youth ranging in age from 2-18 that have had mental, emotional or behavior health issues.  Private or group sessions are available.  A relationship of trust and respect is established during these sessions, which leads to a rewarding relationship between the participant and horse.  Participants are offered a chance to ride their horse the last week of the sessions.

Meadowgate Cavaliers

The word fencing comes from the word defend, meaning to ward away a blow or to protect.  Classical fencing is the study of the sword as a civilian weapon of self-defense.  Fencing is a martial art in which the young and old, men and women, great and small can all participate as true equal.  This is because the fencer relies not on size, size, strength and speed, but on skill, cunning and composure.
Fencing is not a "natural" activity like walking, running, or jumping.  Fencers are not born, they are made.  Every fencer is the product or his or her own efforts and limited to only by desire.  Anyone who is willing to undertake the regular, precise practice can achieve excellence.  Meadowgate once again comes to the forefront with an innovative program that will provide a transformative experience.

"Mad Courage"   That's a phrase that was often used to refer to the exploits of light cavalry, such as the Hussars.  Mad courage and impeccable gallantry.  No where are these characteristics more perfectly embodied than in that favorite cavalry arm, the Sabre.  Ideally suited for mounted close-quarters combat, the sabre was equally useful on foot, and was often the preferred weapon for the duel.

In all our fencing classes we emphasize safety and courtesy above all.  Intro to Sabre students will learn the fundamental principles of dismounted sabre fencing: balance, alignment, focus and distance: basic sabre actions, and the underlying code of chivalry comprising excellence, truthfulness, loyalty and benevolence.

In more advanced classes to come, students will master basic skills and broaden their repertoire.  Qualified students will also have the opportunity to practice sabre skills on horseback.

We have created the Meadowgate Cavaliers, integrating the arts of swordsmanship and horsemanship, to enable and encourage your child to cultivate positive character traits: excellence, integrity, self-discipline with a rich history, that will have a positive influence on body, mind, and spirit.

Meadowgate Cavaliers is a unique program, not offered anywhere else!!!

A girl with a horsePonderosa Pals Youth Program

The Ponderosa Pals Youth program is an individualized program for kids that have been in rough home life situations.  Some may have been abused physically, mentally, or verbally.  Some may have dysfunctional families and need to have a “project.”

Our focus on these kids is centered on caring and helping. The goal is to build their self-esteem, to teach them responsibility and respect, but most of all to establish a bond of trust that will last a lifetime.

Ponderosa Pals is a “step program.”  All kids start at step one and graduate to the next step once they have reached each step’s goals.  They receive individualized attention and guidance by an approved Meadowgate staff member.  They earn rewards by completing the steps and may choose what they wish to do with those rewards.  They may be working toward a T-shirt, boots, riding helmet, riding lessons, etc.  All rewards are centered around what they may need to work around horses.

As we are guiding these kids through the program, we introduce them to horses that have come from similar, if not the same, backgrounds.  An abused horse internally knows in its own special and unique way that these kids are hurting also and they tend to bond with them in magical ways.  The horses do not see these kids as threats to their well-being and a mutual helping and healing process starts.  As they start working together, the kids form a strong relationship with the horses and mutual trust is created.  The kids are learning that kindness reaps great rewards.  They are able to see what they have done to help a horse that is nothing but bones transformed into a majestic creature of power and beauty.  They learn through these steps that they have saved and changed a horse’s life…at the same time the horse has done the same for them mentally.  It is an amazing process!!

The youth program operates year round and is based around the kids’ school days and time off.  Their sessions typically last 1 1/2 to 2 hours, depending on where they are in the steps.

We work closely with parents, schools, and agencies to know the needs of the kids attending.  This program will grow as Meadowgate grows. It is another integral part of our mission.  Obviously, this free program relies heavily on financial donations as well as material donations the kids need, such as riding helmets, work boots, riding boots, saddles, bridles, etc.

We are very strict on safety precautions and we require the use of safety items before the child may participate.  Since not every child is able to afford the items needed, we allow them  to “borrow” from Meadowgate until they have earned their own.

If you are interested in donating items, please see our list of needs.  If you would like to know more about our youth program, please contact us by e-mail at Meadowgatehorses@aol.com
